5 WAYS TO GET PROMOTED IN 2013 - Forbes.com

With the holiday season upon us, we begin to reflect upon the ebbs and flows of the past year; our success stories and areas where we can still improve.  This is a time when we begin to   reevaluate our career aspirations and choices and make new decisions.   One thing is for sure:  we must all come to accept that the old ways are not as effective anymore if we are to advance in our careers.  As such, now is the time to think carefully about what it will take for you to get promoted at work in 2013.

I have written frequently about how to get discovered in your work and the importance of building momentum back into your career.  My message is one about being courageous enough to stand out in the crowd – amongst your peers and colleagues.   As you head into 2013, think about how you can begin to sell change, manage your personal brand and create enough of a distinction that you become everyone’s “go to person.”
This is not about self-promotion, but rather how you can be more bold, present new ideas, create a followership, and earn the right to be sponsored at work.  Getting promoted is harder than it’s ever been.   In the past, you just had to perform your job description well, follow the status quo, generate results and show support for the organization’s social responsibility initiatives.    Today, you must also be respected enough to earn a voice at the table – by successfully managing crisis and change, innovating with an entrepreneurial attitude, and diplomatically navigating the political environment at your workplace.

1.      Demonstrate a Strong Capacity for Growth
You must be able to show the ability to evolve your thinking and the capacity to expand your skill sets.    The old ways of being good at something and never expanding your abilities are over.   You must work twice as hard to illustrate your capacity for growth – and this will require you to invest in yourself and your know-how more than ever before.

Identify the 3 – 4 areas in your work that will enable you to grow in your company and contribute in more meaningful and purposeful ways — and then make the effort to invest in those areas.  This may mean taking an extension course, online training, rebuilding your network, etc.  The capacity for growth requires you to have a thirst for knowledge and the ability to learn new things.  You must passionately pursue a desire to assume and handle greater responsibilities.  If not, you will become irrelevant quickly.
Stretch yourself and test your limits.  Most people don’t know their capacity for growth – and this will give you a competitive advantage.
2.      Possess an Attractive Attitude
We have heard it said many times that attitude is everything.   Well…it does count for a lot.   In today’s workplace, you not only have to possess a great attitude – but one that is attractive and likable.    People at work must want to work with you – if they like your attitude, your aptitude has a better chance to be discovered.    Your behavior, the choices you make, your relatability and your overall character are being measured at all times.    Your ability to “fit into” the corporate culture and enable it depends on relational skills that attract others to want to engage with you.    Leaders can detect those who make others want to do better and who attract a crowd of supporters.

Likeability is an incredibly valuable trait when you consider how many people are so miserable in their work.  As such, be helpful, show humility, be optimistic and show your empathy towards others.  Take the time to show interest in others.   Help others to be successful.

Remember, if people don’t like you – they will not trust you.

3.      Have the Courage to Think Big and Take Risks
You must have the audacity to be bold.    This requires you to think, act and innovate in ways that come most naturally do you.   It means that you need to trust your gut and allow your passionate pursuit of purpose to take flight.  It’s your time to showcase the years of hard work that have given you the permission to be bold in this moment.   Put your capabilities to the test.  Seize the opportunity.

How often does your gut tell you to take action during times of adversity – but you don’t.  Instead, you wait for those around you to take the calculated risks that you were hesitant to take yourself?  Sound familiar.

In 2013, you must trust yourself enough to take action.  Don’t wait.   The courageous ones may not always win, but more often than not, they will be respected.

4.      Earn the Trust of Others
When your boss says, “I am not worried about your performance” – this is a sign of trust.    During a time when people have trouble trusting others let alone themselves, building followership because you are trustworthy is a powerful asset – and essential for getting promoted.

Being trusted by others is not earned just because you are likeable.   You must know how to build rapport, be a strong communicator, present the right credentials, be a master at conflict resolution, and be diplomatic with people.   These are the keys to building trust in your workplace as I discuss in detail in my article – Effective Managers Earn Trust Quickly By Doing 5 Things Well.

5.      Be Loyal At All Costs
Being loyal to your company and the brand you serve is paramount to your success.  As those who have done it successfully will tell you, “I drink the company Kool-Aid because I like the taste.”  In other words, your personal values must align with those of your organization in order for you to be unconditionally loyal.   You know this to be true when, for example, your loyalty is tested by the temptation of internal gossip, or when the executive recruiter calls you about the job your competitor wants to offer you.

Loyalty is a powerful trait that measures one’s character in an instant.

For example, I will never forget the job offers I received from competitors during my tenure at Sunkist.    While these other companies offered to pay me more money, they could never replace my responsibilities at the time, future opportunities, and the camaraderie and trust I had built with my colleagues and the executive team.    As difficult as the temptations were, my loyalty to Sunkist paid off and led to multiple promotions.

Getting promoted requires a lot more than just what your job description demands.

As you begin to map-out your career goals for 2013, I strongly urge you to integrate these five principles into your plan.  Hold yourself accountable.  Be responsible.   Allow your integrity to flourish.   Enjoy your promotion!

MSC TOOK THEIR TALENTS TO SOUTH BEACH

The Milestone Management Team is back from a fun, relaxing weekend in Miami! Brian, Clint and Joanna got to enjoy the warm waters of South Beach, catch some sun, and even rode wave runners! There was a talent show that showcased all of the talented, entertaining, and very hilarious people that are in our organization. Cash prizes were awarded to the best candidates! REFLECTING ON AND EDUCATIONAL AND EVENTFUL SUMMER

The summer of 2012 has been very eventful for Milestone Consulting! We have had several opportunities to travel, connect with awesome people, and witness some amazing events and destinations. Here are some of the highlights of our summer:

In late July, Milestone Consulting had the chance to attend the National Conference in Atlanta, GA. We were able to take 15 of our top account reps! We had a great time networking with top leaders in the business and getting excited for our future endeavors. Milestone celebrated the accomplishments of our owner, Brian Bangor and many other top leaders. It was a great weekend in Atlanta which left us excited and hopeful for our future opportunities.

In August our owner, Brian, had the opportunity to travel to London for a week for the 2012 Summer Olympics! While there, Brian got to see several Olympic competitions, visit some awesome sites in London, and even meet a few famous faces! He came back with lots of great stories and pictures from this opportunity of a lifetime! Hard work really does pay off in incredible ways!
A couple weeks later, a few members of Milestone Consulting had the opportunity to travel to the beautiful state of Idaho for a weekend of fun and relaxation. While in the beautiful mountains of Idaho, the crew went white water rafting, horseback riding, and sightseeing. It was a great chance to see friends and relax in a state that was new to all of us!

Milestone Consulting took advantage of the day off on Wednesday to celebrate the 4th of July in style. The crew traveled to Oologah Lake for some fun festivities! Burgers and brats were on the grill while swimming, football, watching fireworks, volleyball and our annual Milestone Consulting Cornhole Tournament took place. Jonathan/Donald and Brian /Clint made it to the finals of the tournament! The double elimination style bracket was a fun and competitive event! Donald and Jonathan took the first game but they had to beat Brian and Clint twice to take home the trophy. The last game took unusually long due to the superior performance of both teams. Brian and Clint took the victory in a close and heated battle! The evening was wrapped up by watching some amazing 4th of July fireworks here in Tulsa. Happy Independence Day!

MILESTONE CONSULTING TRAVELS TO LA

Throughout last week the management at Milestone Consulting flew to Los Angeles to spend time with some of the top office consultants in the business. Leaving on Sunday, the week was filled with many great opportunities to have one-on-one conversations with consultants on how to improve office leadership and grow our organization.
The trip to California was not strictly for business, though. We spent a full day on the golf course enjoying the summer sun and shooting the breeze with the other office owners and consultants, who consulted us on our golf game as well! To top it off, we had the chance to attend games three and four of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, where the local Kings beat the Devils in both games. “Work hard, play hard,” was definitely our mantra for such a fun and eventful week!

5 BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SUCCESS

Success has become an overly and not always appropriately used buzz-word in life nowadays. That is because the very concept is often muddled by myths which cause people to approach their goals the wrong way.

Here are some mistaken perceptions you need to avoid if you want to stay on the right track.

#1: You Just Have To Go Through The Motions
Here’s a basic truth: The world will not make it easier for you to succeed. The path isn’t laid out for you, so you can’t expect stellar results with half-baked efforts.

As a wise man once said, “Do or do not. There is no try.” Life has a way of dealing in absolutes, especially when it comes to making a name for yourself. Never assume that you just have to show up and everything will follow. Nobody got to where they are without shedding blood, sweat and tears.

#2: You Can Do It Alone
It’s one thing to rely on your own strengths to succeed; believing that you already know everything is another matter entirely. Success doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and there are other people in the scene that can enrich your existing knowledge.

It isn’t wrong to acknowledge that other people’s perspectives can inspire you and help come up with new ways to succeed. The first step to broadening your horizons is by simply asking other people about their own ideas.

Have the initiative to ask for their input and learn what you can from them. You might be surprised by how much you’ll grow after circulating within your professional community.

#3: There Is No Margin For Error
Ok, so maybe life-and-death scenarios do exist, but most of the time, making mistakes won’t mean the end of the world. Of course, there will be a time when you’re not supposed to screw up, but this doesn’t apply to all parts of your life.

Expect to make a handful of mistakes along the way. Only through hands-on experience will you learn the right way to do things. You might think you have it all figured out – especially when you’re just getting started – but doing it in the real world will reveal unforeseen factors which you didn’t take into account. This is why trial and error is an essential part of the learning process.

Remember, it’s not about the mistakes you make, but rather how you make use of the lessons you’ve learned from them.

However, don’t think this is an excuse to be mediocre because the point is to always give it your best shot. If you miss the mark, take notes and do it again.

“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan

#4: You Need To Keep At It Non-Stop
In the long run, it’s important to be consistent with your efforts and maintain the desire to succeed. However, perseverance should also be tempered with knowing when to take a step back and reflect.

What does this mean? There’s nothing wrong with taking a short breather to give yourself a chance to see where you’re at. Part of succeeding is about re-evaluating your current approach every now and then.

Are you still using the most efficient way to meet your ultimate goals? You might find that you can refine what you’re doing by reflecting for just a bit. This also prevents you from developing “tunnel vision”.

At the most basic level however, you also can’t ignore the need to recharge your batteries. Regardless of everything else, there is a physical aspect to your being so you need to take care of yourself through proper rest and eating well. In the big picture, this is a good investment because getting sick could throw a wrench in your plans.

#5: You Can Slack Off Once You’ve Reached The Top
You know how they say that it’s not the journey, but the destination? Success is awesome, but it’s not the end-all, be-all. It’s not just about hitting a target – it’s also what you do after you’ve reached your initial goals.

Are you just going to take it easy and switch off your “motivation switch”? Or are you going to make new goals and challenge yourself? These choices represent your desire to grow as a person.

Sure, you don’t always have to move on to a new project right away, but it is important to ask yourself “How can I do things better?”

Here’s the thing: people change, whether you like it or not. Think about it – are you the same person that you were 10 years ago?

We’re never static and always remain in motion. Even after you’ve earned your first million, you’re either moving forward or backward. Although you should never take your current success for granted, you do need to understand that everything you do in the present will either help you evolve or decline.

Besides, you’re not the only one – the rest of the world is also in a state of constant change. This means you need to avoid being complacent to stay on top of your game and adapt to ever-shifting circumstances.

In many ways, long-term success is not just about adding another trophy to your collection. In the greater scheme of things, it boils down to maintaining the same attitude and mindset that made you successful in the first place. The way to do this is to stay sharp, stay hungry!
Thank you to our friends at addicted2success.com for the meeting!

LEADING FROM THE FRONT

Every week, Milestone Consulting acknowledges one top Account Rep for hard work, great attitude, setting the pace and the progressing of their career. This acknowledgement is not based on the views of the managers, but based on the group that makes up Milestone Consulting.
This week’s top Account Rep is Joe Alexander. Joe was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. After graduating high school, Joe served 4 years of service in The United States Air Force. In December of 2011, Joe pursued his career with Milestone Consulting. Through recent success, Joe credits his achievements to his hard work and “award winning” smile.

MILESTONE CONSULTING TRAVELS TO CONFERENCE IN ATLANTA

To celebrate our achievements throughout 2011 and set goals for 2012, the management at Milestone Consulting flew to Atlanta, Georgia, to our organization conference. The event spanned the weekend and included workshops for managers and administrators along with speeches by top guys in the business!

The Keynote Speaker for the event, Eric Greitens, was a navy seal who served overseas and also founded The Mission Continues, a non-profit organization which helps veterans continue to serve their country and community after returning home from war. His invigorating speech focused on training to become a navy seal, the incredible challenges they faced, and the success they felt after reaching their goals.

Between speakers, the audience was entertaining by performers of Cirque du Soleil, only continuing the theme that hard work and dedication will let you reach whatever goal you set for yourself. We all had a great time in Atlanta, and came home to Oklahoma motivated to take on the new year!
